5.0 out of 5 stars Review from a collector's viewpoint, December 4, 2011
= Durability:4.0 out of 5 stars  = Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars  = Educational:3.0 out of 5 stars

I purchased this set for myself, a 31 y/o Star Wars nut, so this review is going to be more for people like me that build these sets for the fun of uilding and to put them on display. So far this is my largest Lego build, and by far was the most enjoyable to put together. The detail level on it is very nice, and all of the core structure is very sturdy. There are a few pieces that will pop off fairly easily, but they are all cosmetics (antennas, turrets, etc.) and are quite simple to just pop back on. The stickers appear to be pretty good and will probably stay attached on display for a long time. It is pre-organized into numbered bags that correpsond to a step in the build process, which makes it much less time consuming to build (no more digging through 1k pieces looking for that one little 1peg piece). This organized assembly process is also kind of neat to watch, as it goes together just like modern naval vessels: One segment at a time. It is a large kit, and will take up... Read more

3.0 out of 5 stars Kinda dissapointing actually, October 26, 2011

Bought this product for my 10 yr old nephew's birthday (plus the fun of building a big lego set, I admit : Construction took about 3 hours with a couple of breaks spaced throughout. was initially impressed just by the sheer size of the thing (twenty inches long) other than a couple of small antennas that kept popping off, it felt sturdy. Came with a retractable carrying handle which was a nice touch. Comes with stickers for some of the bricks instead of having printed pieces. A major bummer for me, and potentially for kids, as one sticker going on crooked could ruin the whole look of the set. I'm not huge on the clone wars, so I cannot attest to the jedi figures or the troopers, yoda was kinda cute, my nephew say the rest were "cool". works for me. my biggest gripe is just the overall play-ability of this thing. it's too big for a kid to do any meaningful "swoooshing". I would assume that most kids would sit this thing on the floor and act out scenes inside the ship. Most lego sets... Read more

This is great. My son was happy with it. It required skill to build, but did not cause frustration. It was larger than we expected. So often, toys are much smaller than expected. It's larger size was a pleasant surprise!

History of Lego Sets: How the Phenomenal Brick Toy Became a Phenomenal Household Name

History of Lego Sets: How the Phenomenal Brick Toy Became a Phenomenal Household Name

Did you know that the Lego sets you and your children love to play and build things with were the brainchild of one genius of a Danish man who originally made and sold ironing boards, stepladders, and wooden toys? Ole Kirk Christiansen established his humble woodworking business in the little village of Billund, where he and his son Godtfred, who was only 12 years old in 1932, started on constructing their dream into a reality.Naming the Business. Two years after the business was established, the Christiansens named their products Lego, a word coined from "leg godt," a Danish phrase that means "play well." Business was flourishing for the Christiansens, but tragedy struck in 1942 when a blazing fire burned the entire Lego factory down. This did not dampen the family's spirits, though, as soon after, they were producing wooden bricks they called Automatic Binding Bricks. Not exactly the most attractive name in the world, but these are the predecessors to the modern Lego sets.Shift from Wooden Bricks to Plastic. The original wooden Automatic Binding Bricks had pegs on top and hollow bottoms.By the early 1950s, the Christiansens were the biggest toy manufacturers in Denmark, having been the first to buy a plastic injection-molding machine for toy-making.Ole, the original founder, was too old to man the business, so Godtfred took over and decided the shift from wooden bricks to plastic. However, the Automatic Binding Bricks still lacked one quality that makes it different from the present Lego brick we all know and love. The Stud-and-Tube Design.1958 was a year to remember for everyone in the Lego family.Ole Christiansen died and the Lego brick we have come to know so well came into existence during that very same year. The company had finally gotten it right, putting studs on the top of the brick and matching tubes at the bottom. They had this design patented and are using it up to the present.A Lego brick made today could match a classic made in 1958.In 1960, another fire ravaged the Lego factory and they decided to stop producing wooden toys altogether.Wheel Manufacturers, Too!Did you know that Lego also produces the highest number of wheels in the world? Lego wheels, that is.In 1961, they manufactured their first wheel and are still manufacturing over 300 million Lego wheels today. These are added into 37,000 Lego sets every hour with thousands of other Lego pieces.Years later, in 1967, Lego released Lego Duplo, which is a larger variety more suitable for younger children.Lego Sets Everywhere.Since then, Lego has made its mark in the lives of both children and adults as one of the best toys ever. The sets began to include mini-figures who had different skin colors, facial expressions, and hairstyles. The company began releasing sets based on different themes, like cities, medieval ages, even dolls, and licensed sets like Harry Potter and Star Wars.

Outright, I like this set because of the nice BIG Christmas tree that is included. and some nice minifigs. So what can you expect from this set.

Usually reviews don't have the dimension of the box. I will include it since like me, I order online via Amazon and need to know the computation for the courier costs.

Box is 18.9 x 2.8 x 14.9 inches and around 2.3 pounds quite a big box.
It has 815 pcs for the set plus some extras as usual when you get the set.
The pieces are grouped into 10 plastic bags.

The set has 1 manual and generally subdivided in making the minifigs, the bench and lamp post, the Christmas Tree and lastly the Toy shop itself.

1. Minifigs: It has 7 minifigs. 2 choirs (1 girl in dress, 1 man, Both in
black), 2 kids (girl/boy) in ice skates, 1 toy maker, 1 kid throwing snowballs (2 faces)
and 1 female adult who is assigned to the Christmas tree.

Other figures are a cat in a scared pose, then the... Read more

I got this set last year, it was my first "Christmas" set from LEGO (besides Advent Calendars), and now LEGO is replacing our other little pottery Christmas village that we used to set up every year. With two dogs we can't run the LEGO train around the tree, so we've got a table set up with a small train loop and this set on it and a few bits and pieces from LEGO Advent Calendars.

It comes with a "Santa" in a little swivel chair, working up in his workshop while toys are in display in the store below. The fairly rare "lighted brick" creates a really neat effect if you are displaying in lower lighting. The large tree is also a treat for LEGO fans; while the set comes with the smaller molded trees, the parts to make the larger and much more realistic tree are always interesting, as are the "lights" to put around the tree. Rounding it out are a classic park bench, carolers, and a very nice lamp post.

Coming in at over 800 pieces, it's a bargain for the MSRP,... Read more
